How appropriate that I’m writing my first blog at the beginning of Autumn. I started a journal at the same time a couple of years ago, that has inspired me to start a blog.
It’s not hard to see why this beautiful season has inspired such creativity. Just look around and see the wonder that is Autumn. The stunning hues of orange and yellow draping from the trees in our lovely woodlands and parklands. The deep reds of the berries and the occasional white of the snowberries. Acorns are appearing again. Horse chestnuts and pinecones too. I like to collect a few that have dropped to add a bit of Autumn décor to our house.
Our walk last weekend was around our local park. It’s a smallish park, a wide open space with a few oaks and firs dotted around the green. It is beautifully surrounded by woodlands. A gravel path weaves its way through the trees where you can you can fully immerse yourself in nature. The sound of the birds calling, the falling leaves, vibrant colourful berries clinging to their branches, horse chestnuts preparing to drop, a scattering of pine cones and if you’re quick you can spot a squirrel rushing up a tree. With the friendly hello from a passing dog walker, it was the perfect Autumn walk.
I just love the cooler days of Autumn. They call out for cosy woolly jumpers. The evenings too, where lighting a few candles and wrapping yourself in a thick blanket are essential. With a hot cup of tea and a good book, perhaps some soothing music playing, what better way to spend an Autumn evening as the nights are noticeably drawing in.
It goes without saying that I’m happy that Autumn has returned, like a long lost friend. Whilst there are many things that I enjoy about summer, it is my least favourite time of year. I don’t cope well with the heat, especially as it rises into the high twenties. I feel devoid of energy, both physical and mental energy. My creativity level drops to a low during the hot sticky days.
When Autumn arrives it feels like a switch coming on inside my head, my creative passion returns at full speed. A new knitting project is at the forefront of my mind, perhaps I’ll get my embroidery out or continue with my patchwork. Or maybe I’ll learn something new. I also like to start thinking about presents I can make for Christmas. (Sorry to mention the C word).
Aside from my craft projects I also feel more compelled to write and journal. The cooler days help me to focus more.
How about you, what do you like about Autumn? I’d love to hear how this season inspires you.
I’ve made a little calming video from our walk last weekend, a few observations of the beginning of Autumn. Click on the link below if you would like to take a look.
