Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle - Barbara Winkler
Hello my friend.
A very warm welcome to my little corner of Substack today. Come on in, get warmed up and make yourself comfortable. Let me make you a warm drink. Cocoa? Mulled Wine? A drop of Baileys perhaps?
The garden gently sleeps. There is a hush, a silence. Blissful ignorance of the chaos that reigns in the shopping centres near by. Deep hibernation descends upon the garden and indeed upon us too. The plants and trees stripped bare of their leaves now. Their cover gone, leaving wide open spaces, allowing the soft winter light to gently weave its way through.
We are nearing the darkest time of the year, the Winter Solstice. Daylight and darkness are of equal hours on Saturday 21st, two weeks away. And from that moment on the sun will start to rise earlier and we will once again be welcoming the slow return of the light. There is no rush, there is plenty of time.
Bringing nature inside for festive decorating is like whispering an ode to winter’s calm - Tony O’Neil
Now is the perfect time go foraging in your garden or nearby outdoor space to make natural festive decorations for your home.
I use holly and ivy from my garden to make a garland. I’ll add some fairy lights too.
Pinecones, acorns and dried flowers (e.g. teasels and hydrangea blooms) make beautiful table decorations. Dried twigs and herbs could be added too.
Imagine the smell as you enter the room. A divine natural aroma to awaken the senses.

Journal prompt:
Go out into your garden, or open a window. Use all your senses. What do you see, how does the air feel on your skin, what can you hear?
Feel free to share in the comments below if you wish.
I’ll go first.
Under a veil of darkness. The smell of fresh air. Wild gusting winds sweeping every corner of the garden. Rain softly falling, brushing against skin. Invigorated, rejuvenated. Ready for the day ahead.
Have a beautiful calm week.
Until next time.
